Marcia Baldwin

Another batik artist I want to look at is Marcia Baldwin. Her works definitely have color (yay!). And in her works she takes "normal" subject matter and adds more interest to them through the lines, colors, composition, and texture she adds to them.
Bird of Paradise Abstract
I love her "Bird or Paradise Abstract." Georgie O'Keeffe's flowers first got me into the style of cropping things down to the point where they could possibly be recognizable, but also look like abstract designs. In this piece Baldwin does this, as well as use color to convey shadow and change in lighting, and strategically use the lines to portray curves, depth, and movement.
Equus Trio

Tree of Life
I love, love, love these two batiks in particular. "Tree of Life" just has so many colors used in it that are so strategically interwoven they do not look out of place. I love the vivid hues she uses, it reminds me of a gorgeous sunset. And again, the lines add to the movement and interest of the piece.

And in "Tropical Splendor" of course there are wonderful colors, and she portrays a subject matter that I love-- life under the sea. I love her use of lines because without them, though we know that this is an underwater scene, it would not feel like one. But the swirly lines she places "on top" of the fish and other elements, imply the moving water surrounding them, to the point that even in this batik, the viewer cannot see the fish without having to look through the water.

Poppies Abstract
Like I said before, she takes "normal" things and adds even more interest to them through her use of color and line, as seen in her "Poppies Abstract."
